The artist known for his hits like “Attention” and “One Call Away” took a visit to Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut on Saturday night, May 23. You may know Charlie Puth for his hits in the 2010’s but he is on tour now for “Whatever’s Clever!,” his fourth album bringing in new music and a new era.
An arena full of fans of all ages came together for this concert. I saw older couples, kids, teens, families, and everyone in between. It was beautiful to see so many people come together and create a vibrant energy throughout the night. The arena was electric, with fans flashing their phone flashlights before Puth came on stage.
Fans were dressed up in this event by wearing polos and a tie which is symbolic in his new album “Whatever’s Clever!” and this tour. Puth mentioned on stage that he loved seeing people dress like his album cover.
The concert started off in an electrifying way, getting fans hyped before he started singing. Puth opened with his song “Beat Yourself Up,” which immediately had fans clapping and swaying throughout the song. He was showing off on the piano with his impressive piano skills in this song and others which left me impressed and made the crowd louder and more excited.
If you went to his concert, you would see the passion Puth has for his music. During every song, he was fully present and immersed in his performance. You can tell that Puth put everything in this tour to make this show outstanding and lively. I have been to concerts where there are a few songs that lose energy, but Puth was showing up for every song he performed.
The stage was a triangle shape, a concept I have not seen before that made it unique and intriguing. He had three backup singers Jayden Gray, Lorea Turner, and Liiv. Puth went above and beyond to give his backup singers their time to shine by giving them verses on his songs. “Home” was one of those songs as well as “Sideways.”
He also had a live band behind him as well that would have moments of them showcasing their talent which was incredible. His bass player Brandon Brown and drummer Cedric Thomoson brought a thrilling energy in the crowd.
In one of Puth’s conversations with the crowd, he mentioned his support and gratitude to teachers and shouted out a former teacher who inspired him to make music. He complimented how the crowd sounded noting that he can tell some of us are musicians and gave a few inspirational messages to go after your dream, because he never expected to be performing for a crowd like us and we shouldn’t think we couldn’t as well.
Although this tour is for his newest album, he had a good variety of songs released a while ago, bringing back nostalgia for everyone in the arena. “Voicenotes” (2018) and “Nine Track Mind” (2015) were the most played albums besides “Whatever’s Clever.”
I was especially impressed by Puth’s vocals throughout his performance. He hit high notes multiple times and he sounded clear, proving how talented he is. He also had meaningful moments in between songs, talking to the crowd a couple of times which became emotional and expressing his gratitude to the crowd and fans for showing up and supporting him.
Puth expressed how happy he is and you can tell by his performances. The night was full of dancing and singing. After attending multiple concerts, the energy in this arena was one of my favorites that I have witnessed. Puth put out a memorable show that left me to listen to more of his music after.
When I was leaving the arena after Puth performed “Changes” from his newest album, two people behind me were talking about how impressed they were by Puth’s performance and speaking about how much talent he has. I haven’t seen much on social media about Puth’s tour or his new music, however, it deserves to be recognized because he is an outstanding performer. I was captivated throughout the show due to his vocals and the inclusion of his band and backup singers.
I would recommend going to this tour, as you will be left becoming a fan or a bigger fan of his. There is a reason why Puth was on everyone’s radio in the 2010’s and I believe his music now should get the same attention and treatment.
