Bruno Mars released a new album, “The Romantic,” on Feb. 27 — his first full-length solo project since “24K Magic” dropped in 2016. After nearly a decade without his solo studio album, fans have been waiting for new music. The wait, it turns out, was worth it.
After several listens, “The Romantic” delivers exactly what many fans love about Bruno Mars: smooth vocals, nostalgic pop influences and songs centered around love, relationships and emotional vulnerability. The album is a healthy mix of slower, heartfelt tracks with upbeat dance pop.
Here is my honest review of each track, along with a rating for every song and the album overall.
1. Risk It All — 8/10
The album opens with “Risk It All,” a strong introduction that immediately sets the emotional tone for the rest of this album. The song revolves around the idea of sacrificing everything for someone you love, something we’ll see in later tracks as well.
Some really strong lyrics in Track one: “It’s crazy but it’s true, There’s nothing I won’t do, I’d risk it all for you.” It feels like a declaration that this album will focus heavily on romance, vulnerability and commitment.
2. Cha Cha Cha — 10/10
An immediate favorite. The song shifts the mood from emotional to celebratory with a lively beat that feels built for weddings, parties and dance floors. The kind that even gets your uncle moving and grooving. The groove is catchy and impossible not to move to, with an elegant instrumentation and a rhythm that feels inspired by classic funk and Latin pop.
Only further reinforces the notion that Bruno remains on top when it comes to his upbeat pop style. There aren’t many that do it like him.
3. I Just Might — 10/10
This was the single that gained popularity instantly. It received Top 40 love on the charts and was being played on radio stations weeks before the album release.
This combines playful lyrics with an incredibly catchy chorus that sticks with you after the first listen. This might become a favorite among many out of the entire nine-track album and shows off the incredible vocals Bruno Mars is known for. No skips, I love this one.
4. God Was Showing Off — 7.5/10
While not the most memorable song on the album, this track still showcases one of the things we love about him-his voice. This one leans into the soul genre a little heavier, too.
5. Why You Wanna Fight? — 6/10
Slower than the previous tracks, but not in a bad way, just feels a little different after the first few. Caught me off guard, but I enjoyed it enough, would listen to it again.
6. On My Soul — 8/10
Sensing a theme for this album. Another get up and dance song with the incredible beat, he’s killing it so far. Messaging stays clear, and so does the theme, which can get away from some. No skip, will listen again.
7. Something Serious — 9/10
Might be a favorite so far. The lyrics are so good, and so are the instrumental and beat. If you’re not dancing at this point in the album, you might have to check yourself. I can see this being charted and a top pop song over the next few weeks.
8. Nothing Left — 8.5/10
This song explores the emotional aftermath of giving everything to a relationship and realizing there’s nothing more you can offer. The song’s theme centers on emotional exhaustion and heartbreak; he is reflecting on how love can drain someone when it isn’t returned the same way.
The beat was kind of different from the rest, but it’s heat. It totally works for the breakup song, poor Bruno.
9. Dance With Me — 10/10
A perfect closer. Its style reminded me a ton of his other song “Leave the Door Open,” which was a touch of nostalgia. Perfect way to cap off the album and finish strong.
We’ve been waiting a little bit for a solo Bruno Mars Album, and boy was it worth the wait. This album was OUTSTANDING, and I loved it. It’s a 9/10 album for me, zero skips and I’m so happy we have some new music by him to listen to.
