Connecticut native and comedian David Rusk recently announced a comedy show to fundraise for “The Ocean Cleanup,” a nonprofit with a mission to clean and remove plastic from oceans.
David Rusk, who began comedy at a young age after listening to Louis C.K. with his parents, says the idea came from wanting to combine comedy with purpose. For Rusk, this show isn’t just about getting laughs; it’s about making an impact. The idea, he said, came to him when he realized how much potential comedy has to bring people together.
“I wanted to do something good, and I think it would be really cool to have a recurring series of a show, like maybe once every other month. We can pick a different charity or keep doing the same one, even, not totally sure,” he explained. “I wanted to pick a charity or a type of cause that you don’t really see people talk about much. I’m definitely more of an environmentalist type of person than I am a political type of person.”
The night promises a mix of personalities and comedic styles, from high-energy storytelling to dry one-liners, offering a little something for everyone. Rusk hopes that the combination will keep audiences engaged and make the cause feel even more accessible. Joining Rusk onstage will be a lineup of his closest friends and fellow comics, Brian Glass, Whitney Allen, Corrine Tryon, Chadd Lennon, Travis Hancock and Iann Carr.
“I wanted to pick some of my favorite comics in the scene, who also happen to be my friends, with hopes of a good show that people will enjoy. I think they’re all really great. I tried to pick a few different vibes, not just the same type of stand-up for the whole show,” said Rusk.
As the show draws closer, Rusk is focused on keeping his nerves in check, the only way he knows how, by staying grounded. He laughs about not being the type to obsess over notes or rehearse every punchline.
“I try to talk to people, try to take my mind off it,” said Rusk. “I feel like if I look through my notes and I think super hard about what I’m gonna do on stage, I just try to have a coffee, relax.”
Through comedy, Rusk has truly found his passion. His love for comedy started early, and he says it’s always been less about chasing fame and more about connecting with people. He also took a moment to reflect on his comedic past and how his past experiences have led him to this moment.
“I remember when I was a little kid, I just had this weird sort of fascination with it. It was just super interesting to me. And this is even before a comedian ever made me laugh. I just like the idea of it. I wanted to tell my stories in a way that makes people laugh. I think it’s great that through my shows, I’m able to use my comedy and platform to inform people about this great cause.”
Through his strong belief and support for “The Ocean Cleanup”, Rusk is truly passionate. When asked what he hopes audiences take away from the show, Rusk didn’t miss a beat.
“Obviously, I want people to laugh and have a great night,” he said. “But if they also walk out thinking a little more about what’s happening to our oceans, that’s even better. Comedy can make people feel good, and maybe it can make them do good too.”
David Rusk’s show will take place on November 22nd at Howard’s Bookstore in Torrington, Connecticut. Doors will open at 6:30 pm.
