As a kid who grew up in the 2010s, Flo Rida is an artist who has been a staple of my generation. He produced club banger after club banger, and when you mix that with several thousand college kids trying to have a great night, you get a spectacular show. I definitely got lucky by snagging a barricade spot with a couple of my friends who were at the front of the line, and that enhanced the whole experience without a doubt.
DJ Fire started as the opener, and he was super versatile, which I appreciated a lot. His set was all over the place, playing club bangers along the lines of Flo Rida’s music, but he sprinkled in some 2010 pop hits too. Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus’s songs all made appearances throughout DJ Fire’s set.
He brought a ton of energy and was interactive and engaging with the crowd for his entire time. All in all, DJ Fire’s set as the opener clicked just right, and he was just the man to set the vibes before the headliner hit the stage.
When asked how he was preparing for his show at Quinnipiac, Flo Rida said, “Working out, getting a lot of rest, and just ready to bring the party.” I’m not sure I can even describe just how much he brought the party.
Not just that, but Flo Rida also brought fellow Miami native and signee to International Music Group, his record label, Oya Baby to hype up the crowd. She played a few of her own songs in the beginning, and I was honestly a bit sad she didn’t do some more.
Her music is similar to artists like Rico Nasty, Flo Milli, or Megan Thee Stallion, all of whom I adore. Oya Baby stayed out with Flo Rida for his entire set, which made for some really cool crowd moments..
Flo Rida started his set with “Right Round”, and it got the crowd going right away. He emphatically took a towel off of his head and tossed it into the pit, a theme that would continue for the rest of the night.
He made great use of his small stage space by bringing a bunch of students on stage for a couple of songs including “Move, Shake, Drop,” “Low” and “GDFR”. “GDFR” was one of my favorite songs of the show because during each chorus he would hand a different student the microphone to scream, “It’s going down for real!”
One of my other favorite songs of the night happens to be one of Flo Rida’s favorites too. “I love performing ‘Low’,” he said. “As soon as you hear the intro start, you hear the crowd’s reaction. They’re like, ‘This is what I came here for.’”
While that song wasn’t one of my favorites before the concert, this performance changed my mind. The energy was palpable.
When I talked to some of my friends after the show they didn’t really understand why I liked it so much. I think once I realized I was there to scream until my voice gave out and to jump around with all my friends, it became an even better time for me. “Low” is definitely what brought me to those thoughts.
My second favorite song was “Club Can’t Handle Me.” Of course the energy was high, but this song brought it to another level. The entire crowd was getting into it, so much that Flo Rida hopped on the shoulders of one of his team members and got walked around the entire venue.
My favorite song of the night was definitively “Wild Ones”. Flo Rida brought more students on stage for this one, so the crowd responded really well. Combined with the fact that this is one of his most popular songs, the entire venue was practically exploding.
Getting my first-ever barricade spot made this concert really special and a super intimate experience. I’m so grateful that I got this amazing experience for my first-ever Wake The Giant!
