TYA (pronounced “tie-yuh”) a self-identified “anxious queer pop artist” from Canada released their new single Venetian Blind on January 19th. TYA makes music for all the young queer hopeless romantics out there; their song “Josephine” is the perfect example of this.
From the gleeful vibe to the loving lyrics, “Josephine” feels like it belongs in a coming-of-age movie. The music video for “Joesphine” matches this vibe to a T, and the video won Best Music Video at the Toronto International Music Video Festival last year, for good reason. Everything TYA does is done with such care and creative excellence that she is clearly a star on the rise.
TYA’s new single, “Venetian Blind,” is no exception. The new single is a sensual R&B song about unrequited love and craving a different kind of intimacy, and while “Venetian Blind” is a bit of a shift in genre it is still so uniquely TYA. From the heartfelt lyrics to the hypnotic beat that amplifies every word spoken, the song matches TYA’s energy. This song is a must listen and if you’re anything like me and are a tried-and-true pessimist when it comes to love, this is the perfect song to listen to on all those unrequited love playlists that will be on repeat till Valentine’s Day has passed.
I had the distinct pleasure of listening to “Venetian Blind” a few days before the official release and it’s safe to say it’s been on repeat since. Do yourself a favor and listen to Venetian Blind and become immersed in the beautifully artistic narration of this song. TYA is a bold unapologetic queer artist who creates bold unapologetic queer music that will have you singing along by the end of the first chorus.
