One of New Haven’s most iconic college dance clubs, “Toad’s Place” on York St., is set to take center stage in an upcoming documentary.
What do Yale students, Bob Dylan and Drake all have in common? Probably not much, but at the very least they can all be found at Toad’s Place. “Toad’s” as the kids call it, is a premier nightclub located in the heart of New Haven, CT that features live music of all genres and college dance parties.
Toads is a highly established location that’s hosted hundreds of major bands and musical acts since the 70’s. Their stage has been home to global phonemons not limited to The Rolling Stones, U2, Cardi B, and Kanye West. With such huge names under their belt, it’s no surprise to me that their story is set to hit the big screen.
News of the documentary first broke back in November and an official Kickstarter page has kept fans updated since then.
The documentary is set to be directed by Andy Billman, a two-time Emmy, Peabody Award, and NAACP-winning producer with a clear passion for storytelling in the world of entertainment.
Through the use of archival footage, music, period interviews, current (updated) interviews, as well as testimony and commentary from artists, historians, attendees, and the music press, this documentary will showcase the rich history of Toad’s Place.
Currently, the project has 258 backers who have pledged a whopping $75,973 to help bring the documentary to fruition. Backers are able to choose from available awards which range from t-shirts and film posters all the way to credited producer status.
According to the Kickstarter page, the upcoming project has exceeded its fundraising goal in December and will soon move out of the pre-production phase with its funding.
