Learning more about Trey Moore

Mercedes Silva

WQAQ’s PR Manager Mercedes Silva had the opportunity to talk to New Haven’s own up and coming Electronic/Soul artist, Trey Moore. Moore performed on campus in October’s Open Mic Night Event.

Who/what inspired you to start making music and why?

I was inspired by the sounds I heard growing up. I was blessed to have grown up in a home where music was present everyday. Both of my parents and siblings are musicians, they always encourage creativity in the house. At the age of 6 I was given a piano and soon after my father introduced Thelonious Monk. I began to learn his music and pattern my playing after him. Aside from my parents he was my first creative influence.

Is there any one artist in particular that you model your music after?

I wouldn’t say there is one singular person who my music is patterned after, rather my wound stems from multitude of artists who’ve inspired me and touched me with their music in some way. To name a few, I was deeply impacted by the work of Prince, Parliament funkadelic, Frank Ocean, Solange, and Devonté Hynes just to name a few. All of these artists are who I strived to be sonically while developing my won identity.

If you could tour with any artist, who would it be and why?

If it were up to me I’d tour with Solange, I mean, c’mon… she’s just awesome. She has such a profound respect for art and other people. I’ve never been on an official tour but I would like to believe its important to be around people who are kind to others and about their business you know? she Just seems like one of those people.

What would you say makes your music stand out from other artists?

Its not often I think about other artists, or how my work stands against theirs. Rather I’m focused on being the best version of myself I can be.

What is your favorite song to perform and why?

I love playing “On the Run”, we open with that song when we play shows. It just has all of the right energy. I also Love playing release Myself. Sonically its my favorite.

What advice would you give to other people trying to start a career in music?

I’m still learning myself. But from what I’ve learned thus far I would advise other aspiring artist to be true to self. In this age we’re a part of you may feel the need to move with whatever is current or popular. Literally, all that matters is where you are in your growth process. Trust your creative gut, there are tons of people who’ll connect and identify with your art, don’t worry.

If you could describe your sound in 3 words, what would it be?

Aesthetic. Space. Sonics.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career thus far?
The most memorable moment has been the release of my first project Half moon. It was pretty much my way of jumping once i made the decision to leave school. Everyone has been pretty receptive and open to my art and that means the world. It’s given me a boost and confirmation that this is where I’m supposed to be… I’ll never forget that.
