I bet you have all heard that viral TikTok hit “End of Beginning.” It’s one of those songs that sneaks up on you, makes you feel something, and then sticks in your head for days.
What you might not know is that the artist behind the track isn’t just a musician– he’s also a familiar face on your screen. Think “Stranger Things.” Now, who’s the first character that comes to mind? Steve Harrington– the guy with the killer hair and surprisingly good babysitting skills?
Here’s the twist: the actor who plays Harrington, Joe Keery, is also the mastermind behind Djo (and for the record, it’s pronounced just like “Joe”– the “D” is silent). He’s been quietly building a name for himself in the music scene, and after hearing “End of Beginning,” I knew I had to see him live.
So when Djo announced a headlining show at College Street Music Hall to replace their canceled show at Soundside Music Festival, I didn’t even hesitate. No second thoughts, no waiting around– I bought my ticket immediately. I was so excited that I ended up camping outside the venue from 10:30 in the morning until doors opened at 7 p.m. That wasn’t the original plan, but honestly? It was worth every minute to land a front-row spot.
The night kicked off with Post Animal, a psychedelic rock band that Joe used to be part of before stepping into the spotlight as Djo. I wasn’t super familiar with their work before the show, but their set blew me away. They brought a mix of fuzzy guitars, wild energy, and dreamy vibes that felt like a perfect warm-up for what was to come.
Their setlist was a rollercoaster, blending catchy jams with deeper, moodier moments. They opened strong with “Caving In,” a groovy, riff-driven track that immediately hooked the crowd. From there, songs like “Gelatin Mode” and “Setting Sun” pushed the psychedelic textures even further, layering swirling guitars and steady rhythms that transported the room.
Two songs, “Maybe You Have To” and “Dorien Kregg,” made their live debuts, adding a fresh element and showing that Post Animal is still evolving their sound. Their performance wasn’t just a nostalgic nod to Joe’s past– it felt alive and current, full of surprises and tight musicianship.
The crowd was fully engaged, dancing and nodding along, especially during the closer “Dirtpicker,” which ended their set on a high note, leaving the audience buzzing with anticipation for Djo’s solo act. Then, Joe Keery stepped on stage as Djo.
From the moment he appeared, the atmosphere shifted. The lighting and visuals matched his quirky, vibrant music perfectly. He played a solid mix of songs from his “DECIDE” album and beyond– “Awake,” “Gloom,” “Half Life,” and naturally, the crowd favorite “End of Beginning.”
Every track felt alive with emotion and energy, pulling the audience into his world as well as popular songs from his most recent album “The Crux,” such as hits like “Gap Tooth Smile”, “Egg,” “Fly,” “Link” and “Back on You.” The Post Animals joined him on stage to perform “Flash Mountain.”
And then there was a moment that still makes me smile. Joe grabbed a water bottle and tossed some water into the crowd– and it landed right on me. Yep, I got drenched by Djo himself. Totally accidental, but honestly? He can spill water on me if he wants.
Watching Joe Keery step out from his TV role and fully embrace his music was incredible. He didn’t rely on his “Stranger Things” fame– instead, he let the songs and his stage presence do the talking. And for everyone in that room, it spoke volumes.
Honestly, I know this might sound dramatic, but I fear it was one of the best nights of my life so far. I’m not being dramatic; I truly will never forget this unforgettable night thanks to Joe Keery.
