Marina and Mallrat put on an amazing show for the “Princess of Power Tour.” Mallrat’s opening set was beautiful, with an enchanting voice and honey-like tone.
She captivated the audience throughout her set. The lighting and aura she carried with her onstage were ethereal and gave an amazing performance. From someone who didn’t know Mallrat before this show, I will definitely consider myself a fan from now on, and I am so glad that I was introduced to her music.
The reverb and echo through her microphone made you feel like you were floating in the crowd, and I have not stopped listening to her album titled “Light hit my face like a straight right” since seeing her live. She bounced across the stage with a weightlessness that artists spend years trying to achieve, but seemed effortless to her.
After introducing herself and her band/DJ, she performed her collaboration with the Chainsmokers, titled “Wish on an Eyelash, Pt 2.” The song has a dreamy, nostalgic feeling that reminds you of the 2010s, when the Chainsmokers were at their most popular. As Mallrat’s set came to a close, the hall was buzzing with excitement for Marina to take the stage.
When the lights went down, the image in the back of the stage projected a video-game-like loading screen, bringing us to the “Princess of Power” main start button. After being shown a selection screen and choosing Marina as our character, we were shown a series of unnamed levels that are slowly revealed throughout the show.
Starting strong with Star Fields, Marina opened the show with “Princess of Power” and “Are You Satisfied?” smoothly transitioning into the second level, titled Familiar Hells.
The second level dives deeper into the difficulties Marina once faced with vulnerability through songs like “Hermit the Frog” and “How To Be A Heartbreaker.” After that, we were taken into the third level, the Cocoon, where we heard “Everybody Knows I’m Sad,” and “I Am Not a Robot,” before blooming into the song “Butterfly.”
With the transformation complete, we have reached the fourth level, Digital Fantasies, in which Marina took a moment to stop and acknowledge her fans and appreciate how much TikTok and other social media platforms have helped her grow as an artist. Digital Fantasies ended with “Metallic Stallion,” which led us right into level five, Party Paradiso.
This level celebrated self-expression, sexuality, and fun outfits. Songs such as “Bubblegum Bitch” and “CUNTISSIMO” were played, and it wouldn’t be a Marina show without a moment to appreciate the effort fans put into their outfits, as three were brought on stage and got to show off their looks for the night at the end of the song.
Following that, we are already at the Final Boss level, in which songs such as “Primadonna,” “Rollercoaster,” and “I <3 You” were there to close us out. Marina put on a fantastic show, and I am so grateful that I got to see an artist I’ve adored since my childhood perform live as an adult; it felt very full circle.
The “Princess of Power Tour” was one for the books, and I’m excited to see where Marina takes us next!
