On April 26, we travelled all the way to Mohegan Sun Arena to watch one half of the Weekend Update and some of his fellow Saturday Night Live cast members. The crowd was packed and prepared for a few hours of comedy.
The opening act was one of the best sets of the night. KC Shornima, a staff writer on SNL, made many jokes about her boyfriend and therapy. She talked about how both she and her boyfriend go to therapy, and she hates it because each therapist will always support their client, so they come out saying that their therapist told them the other person needs to make changes. Her whole set involved her boyfriend, but she kept the crowd engaged and laughing the entire time.
Next up was Emil Wakim, a current SNL cast member. He followed in KC’s footsteps and made a lot of jokes about dating, talking about his girlfriend. He went into detail about their relationship, prefacing each joke and jab by saying they love each other. The crowd really liked him, but little did they know, it would get even better from this point on.
Then came James Austin Johnson with one of the best impressions of Donald Trump I have ever heard. Johnson walked on stage with a glass of wine in hand and Trump impressions ready to go. The impressions had the crowd laughing, and a lot of jokes at the expense of the current political climate, in a voice that was perfectly done. This was a really fun and unique set to get us ready for Colin Jost.
The last cast member featured before Colin was Marcello Hernández, best known for his character Domingo on SNL. A fan favorite on the show, Hernández was fantastic. He made a lot of jokes about flying, specifically about wanting his flight crew to be white because he feels they are more likely to lie to him about any safety issues. He explained to the crowd, who were already crying from laughter, about his fear of flying and exclaiming about how Latino people like him may act when they’re 30,000 feet in the air. His set was mainly about flying and airplanes, including some flight attendant and pilot impressions and the most perfect seat belt ding I’ve ever heard from a human.
Finally, the main event, Colin Jost, took the stage with a drink in one hand and one of the best sets of the night in his head. Jost started off the set with a possible jab at judgmental people, and exclaimed that everyone should be able to be who they want to be, and love who they want to love. He went into a story about being not too far from Quinnipiac University, seeing New Haven, and walking around to see what it has to offer. He described his revelation to the people he noticed on the streets and emphasised the number of homeless people, and others who looked like they were up to some trouble.
I went to grab some popcorn just in time for one of his most memorable stories of the evening, and one that caught me and thousands of others in attendance, laughing till it hurt. He mentioned on one of his stops on tour, he arrived at a hotel and was in a rush so he checked in and had placed his bags in the room.
He did his performance only to come back and find out his room was changed, in confusion he wondered where his bags were. He was told to go retrieve them and to his surprise, there was a lesbian couple having sex as he walked in, with no bag to be found. He mentioned it as an awkward couple of minutes and it took one of the ladies a few minutes to ask, “Hey, aren’t you on that comedy show Saturday Night Live?” To which he replied yes, and introduced himself as former cast member Pete Davidson, which got a rise out of the crowd.
He then discussed the tough situation he found himself in that very same night, as he explained he was tired after a long show, and saw that the staff had put a little chocolate on the pillow. It’s common at many hotels across the country. What you don’t see however, is what Jost explained as himself lying on top of the bed at night, and forgetting the chocolate was there.
He explained he slept through the night while the chocolate melted and got on the sheets, waking up in the morning to find that he got it all over himself and making it seem like he had a little accident. He explained how embarrassing it was to have to show it to the maid who then has to clean the next day, and there’s no way to prove he didn’t poop himself, he joked, “What was I going to say to her, trust me it’s not poop, here smell it.”
Jost told one of his best stories at the end of his set about getting high for the first time. He explained that he got really paranoid while in bed with a girl and left the room to call his parents telling them he had been poisoned. He then forgot he called his parents and got back in bed until his parents ended up showing up while they were having sex and scolded the girl for poisoning their son. Jost definitely learned a lesson that night.
One more thing,
LIVE FROM HAMDEN IT’S PROBABLY NOT SATURDAY NIGHT!!
