Michaela Soucy is WQAQ’s 2024-2025 Folk and Country Genre Manager! Michaela is a fourth-year Law in Society major with a minor in Philosophy. Her top 5 albums are “Motherwell” by Leith Ross, “Down Rounder” by Cat Clyde, “Masterpiece” by Big Thief, “Historian” by Lucy Dacus, “Fear and Lies” by Sick Sad World, and “Green River” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. A fun fact of her’s is that she listened to Meatloaf’s 1997 album “Bat Out of Hell” for 24 hours straight and says, “the best way to listen to music is to hyper-fixate on one album/playlist and listen on repeat until you get sick of it.”
Michaela hosts 40 Below on 98.1 FM, where each week she has a new theme and plays smaller/ underrated artists that fit within that theme: she’s created playlists dedicated to musicians from her home state, as well as playlists of all indigenous artists. Some themes delve into the history of certain music genres, and she talks about how these genres became as popular as they are today. For example, how Bikini Kill shaped Riot Grrl music and how Sublime brought ska punk into the mainstream.
