Australian alternative rock and R&B group Chase Atlantic absolutely rocked MGM Music Hall in Boston this past Friday. Fans lined up as early as 8 AM that morning to show their enthusiasm for the barricade that awaited them inside. The room was filled with fans through all three levels of the sold-out venue. Bringing old and new fans together, the band mixed a perfect setlist of songs from the newest album “Lost In Heaven,” that was released the same night; and favorites from the previous three albums dating all the way back to 2015. Prompting this tour to coincide with the album release, the band emulated much anticipation since this was the first album to release in two years. Friday night wasn’t just a concert, but a celebration for all.
Originating from Cairns, Queensland, Australia, the band consists of brothers Mitchel and Clinton Cave, along with longtime friend and “brother” Christian “Kras” Anthony. Created in a pretty unconventional way, the group formed because of a university assignment for Clinton Cave. When he was tasked with writing a song for a class, he decided to look to his brother and best friend for help. Both Mitchel and Kras were a part of a boy band at the time named What About Tonight before collaborating and forming what is now Chase Atlantic. In multiple interviews, the trio has mentioned that the name “Chase Atlantic” actually has no significance whatsoever, as it was just a random word match-up. In 2014, the band was signed to the management company MDDN, which was overseen by Benji and Joel Madden. With this new relationship the band released the EPs “Dalliance” in 2014, and “Nostalgia” in 2015. The second EP “Nostalgia” brought the breakout hit “Friends” which now has an insane approximate 746 million streams on Spotify. Known for the dark blend of songs, Chase Atlantic uses these tracks to tackle the themes of relationships, substance abuse, and other personal struggles. The songs themselves are not only insanely catchy, but by using several different genres, the band accomplishes a new sound that is original to them. Taking from moody pop, contemporary R&B, edgy rock, and trap beats, the members achieve a psychedelic vibe that entrances the loyal audience that continues to follow today. Since then, the band had signed with Warner Bros. Records in early 2017, but ultimately the band decided to leave and remain independent, and has been since 2019. As the band continues to grow in popularity, the vision remains the same: make unique songs for people who want to live life to the fullest.
Starting off strong with the first stop in Texas, the band began the Lost In Heaven Tour. The tour began in mid-October with the supporting opener 24kGoldn. Though performing before the album had been officially released, fans were ecstatic for the band to return again. Hinting at another album for over a year, C4 as it is termed, brought the community of people back again; or as the band likes to refer to it as, “Entering the Void.” The show itself began promptly at 8pm with 24kGoldn running on stage to sing one of his most popular songs “VALENTINO” dressed in green paint as “Shrek” to fit the Halloweekend theme. The artist known professionally as 24kGoldn came to fame from said single in 2019 after going viral on TikTok. This newfound recognition led the single to reach the Billboard Hot 100. However, this song was not the only to reach the Hot 100, because in 2020 the artist’s most popular hit “Mood” featuring Iann Dior, topped the charts as well holding ample airplay on the radio. 24kGoldn is most known for a hip-hop, pop, and rock sound. With a wonderful start to the music industry, 24kGoldn now has released four albums, and has an approximate 13.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The crowd was electric after hearing the TikTok favorite, and after playing a few more popular tracks, the artist slowed down the venue by playing some new songs from his most recent album “Growing Pains.” All of the new songs immediately won the audience over with the infectious beat of the backtracks and the carefully curated lyrics. The stage presence of 24kGoldn made it extremely clear that an even more successful path in the industry is ahead. The artist surprised fans in the audience by performing an unreleased song which is set to come out later this year; many can find some teasers of this song on the artist’s social media. There is also an upcoming single with Leah Kate set to release November 18. After the show, the artist held a free meet and greet for audience members. Not only was it unbelievable to meet such an incredible artist, but 24kGoldn even went on to state that while visiting and enjoying some time in New Haven in previous months, the artist has a love for Sally’s Apizza. Though it may seem a like a funny comment, the artist conversed some fun tidbits of information about ventures to Connecticut. Don’t fret, 24kGoldn knows there are fans at WQAQ! With such a talented set out of 24kGoldn, one could even think there were two headline tours that night.
By 9 PM, the main event had started. Crowds were pushing forward filling every last inch of space. Crushed like sardines, audience members still found ways to jump around and live it up. Starting the set with an exhilarating “BOSTON,” band members came onto the stage immediately diving into one of the newest singles off the recently released album titled, “Die For Me.” The audience surged closer to the stage, people trying to get the attention of the band members any chance they got. Along with the beloved songs, the band had multiple back drop sets to correlate with the distinct essence of each of the songs. As pictured, songs such as “OHMAMI” had an edgier ominous backdrop to go along with the electrifying guitar and drum accompaniments. Whereas songs such as “Beauty in Death” had a lighter and more floral feel to match the uplifting realization of life and death; a theme that was portrayed off the same titled album from 2021 amidst the pandemic. Mitchel, the lead singer kept the crowd screaming by stating, “Get those hands up right now,” while rhythm guitarist and singer Christian Anthony added to that energy with his quick gestures and movements across the stage. Clinton Cave, known for his incredible saxophone solos in songs, especially didn’t disappoint when the band performed “Heaven and Back” off of the 2019 album “PHASES.” The iconic solo by Cave sent audience members into a trance as if they were hearing the track for the first time all over again. Chase Atlantic sets out to make every performance more special and high energy than the last. Safe to say the members succeeded, it was magical, the devotion and effort put into every fine detail. All the way down to the vocal riffs in between verses. After transporting the audience through multiple phases of albums, the group stated there would be a final song, “Swim,” the most popular off the self-titled 2017 album. Raving and craving more, the audience chanted for an encore as the undoubtedly best song of the discography had yet to be played. Offstage Mitchel Cave laughs into the microphone saying, “Ok this will really be our last song.” The moment that guitar riff played, all time stopped. 2015 was back, everyone was singing from their soul. A song about trying to deal with the blurred lines between friendship and romance; that’s right, “Friends” was the encore. The stage had then gone black and the lights had come back on. Ending a night in “Lost In Heaven,” bringing the crowd back to reality. Though many had begun the emotional journey out of the venue, the overall community of fans truly made the night.
Chase Atlantic is the type of band that finding one song prompts one to listen to the whole album. Buying tickets to this band’s show is more worth it than one can imagine. It’s quite the mesmerizing experience. If you haven’t done so already, make sure to follow them on all of their socials for updates on new music and tour dates. However, for now, listening to the entirety of “Lost In Heaven” is highly recommended.
