“There’s such a sweetness here tonight. I don’t know if you guys feel it, but it’s great,” said Coin lead singer Chase Lawrence towards the end of their set at College Street Music Hall on October 19.
Chase Lawrence, Ryan Winnen, and Joe Memmel make up the indie-rock band Coin from Nashville, Tennesse. The band is most known for their hit song “Talk Too Much” from their 2017 album, “How Will You Know If You Never Try.” The band released studio album number 5, “I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore,” in September of this year. The band has been touring since September 29 and will continue through March 4, 2025.
The “I’m Not Afraid of Tour Anymore” tour came to New Haven with an energy I have never quite seen before. Beginning with the opener, Aidan Bissett, the night was off to a highly energetic start. Bissett, who is joining Coin for the first leg of their tour, put on a great show with both new and old songs, ending with his hit single “Tripping Over Air.”
Coin’s set was simple yet highly effective. The show started with big words on the screen that said “HELLO” in big bold letters. This theme continued through the set with song titles and lyrics as well as different sayings such as “HOW WILL YOU KNOW IF YOU NEVER TRY” and “LEARNING AND LOVING.” On top of this, they also had three panels lit black, white, and green throughout the show and spelled out words. These panels were located above the heads of each band member and would move up, down, and around the band as they performed. The simplicity of this sight made it by far one of my favorites I have seen in a while. I think it really matched the band’s aesthetic as well as creating a great atmosphere for the show, not to mention the fact that it photographed well for audience members.
There truly was a sweetness in the air from the second the show started. The band put on a show full of high-energy pieces mixed with acoustics. The audience loved every second of it. Everywhere I looked, people were smiling from ear to ear, laughing with friends, and singing along. The concert as a whole just had a great vibe.
My favorite part of the show was the few songs where lead singer Chase Lawrence left the front of the stage to go towards the back and play the upright piano and sing acoustic. At these moments, the crowd silenced, and everyone enjoyed his raw vocals and talent on the keys. Lawrence had such control over the space and atmosphere, it was mesmerizing to see.
As the night came to a close, the band returned for an encore and performed their hit song, “Crash My Car,” which was the perfect way to bring together a night of fun, friends, and great vibes. Everyone was singing along and dancing. Everyone there felt the love and joy in the atmosphere, including the band.
I am so lucky to have experienced a show filled with such great people and an incredible band. This will be a night I will never forget. Everyone should get to see and experience Coin on tour at some point in their lives.
