Screaming girls, glitter, and bows everywhere. A daughter and father in front of me posing for a picture to send to mom. A group of eight-year-old girls behind me, dancing in their matching t-shirts and VIP passes. A mom and her best friend are laughing together in their glittery jackets and merch. This is the type of crowd that Meghan Trainor’s Timeless tour brings together. Generations of fun from ages three to seventy are dressed up and ready for the night of their life.
After eight years away from touring, Meghan Trainor is back on the road touring her latest album, “Timeless.” I had the opportunity to see her perform on September 21 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. As a long-time fan and someone who saw her during The Untouchable Tour eight years prior, this was a very full-circle moment for me.
The night started off with popular TikTok star and comedian Chris Olsen delivering a set of comedy and music as crowd members filled the stands. Then, singer Paul Russell took to the stage to deliver a high-energy set full of singing along and dancing. He ended his set with his song, “Lil Boo Thang” which samples the melody from “Best of My Love” by the Emotions. This crossover of decades in music also brought out the older folks in the crowd and brought the arena to their feet to dance along.
The concert proceeded with a brief intermission DJ set by Meghan Trainor’s brother, Ryan Trainor. There were features from audience members, and Chris Olsen returned to the stage to do the infamous H-O-T-T-O-G-O dance by the new pop icon Chappell Roan.
Then came the big moment: Meghan Trainor hit the stage. The crowd went crazy as she rose up into the sky on a sparkling platform. She began her set with a medley of old and new songs, bringing together the best of her albums with hits like “Lips are Movin” and “Don’t I Make it Look
Easy.” This high energy remained throughout her entire set.
She began her set thanking everyone for coming and shouting out many people in the crowd, such as her father and, for the first time ever, her nanny and her high school band teacher. This was a big night for her, with her whole family in attendance, including her husband and brothers.
She played a variety of songs, even bringing out her ukulele to sing one of her first hit songs that recently went viral again on TikTok, “Title.” To this, the crowd of longtime fans like myself were overwhelmed with joy. Aside from this, she kept the bar high with impressive choreography and great vocals as the night went on.
My personal favorite moment from the night was when she played her song “Superwoman.” She took to the stage on her own as the lights turned into a projected rainbow as she sang her heart out. This song was a really special moment with the flashlights in the crowd as she sings about the hardships of womanhood, feeling the support of an arena full of proud women.
Ending the night with one of her biggest songs yet, “Made You Look,” she and her dancers performed the show of a lifetime and gave the audience an encore to remember.
By the end of the night, I was leaving Mohegan Sun Arena with a happy heart. Meghan Trainor makes such positive and uplifting music, and her crowd reflects that immensely. Being surrounded by music with a great message and great people is something that is special to the Timeless tour, and fans will remember this for years to come.
