The infamous Dobbs ruling which reversed Roe v. Wade nearly two years ago has put abortion access in the United States in grave danger. The National Network of Abortion Funds’ executive director, Oriaku Njoku, has gone on record saying that having an abortion in today’s political climate needs more preparation, money, and time than it ever has in the past.
Olivia Rodrigo has recently launched a public initiative in the wake of this crisis . The American pop singer launched “Fund 4 Good”, a new reproductive health campaign, in Southern California, coinciding with the beginning of her Guts world tour. The initiative is named after her iconic song “good 4 u”.
Rodrigo will donate a portion of all ticket sales from the Guts tour’s North American stop to The National Network of Abortion Funds. These funds will assist the local chapters of the organization in removing obstacles to access to abortion by providing financial support to individuals for travel, child care, and lost wages.
Beyond that financial support, the spotlight that a Gen Z pop-star like Rodrigo can bring to abortion funds and reproductive healthcare overall is immeasurable and a huge opportunity to spread awareness towards the issue.
Rodrigo has consistently expressed her support for women’s reproductive rights. The day following the Dobbs ruling, she performed in Glastonbury, dedicating the song “Fuck You” to the five Supreme Court justices who overturned the Roe v. Wade decision. Rodrigo told the audience: “So many women and so many girls are going to die because of this.”
The Guts tour recently stormed through Texas, the heart of the attack on reproductive rights. Thanks to Rodrigo’s campaign, concert-goers have the opportunity to directly interact with people who are fighting for reproductive rights on the ground, with local member organization tents set up at each Guts tour stop in the U.S. The chapters will share information about abortion funds, abortion access, and how anti-abortion legislation is affecting local communities.
