For over 60 years The Beach Boys have stolen America’s heart, producing hit after feel-good hit, creating some of the most iconic songs of all time. I don’t think I’ve ever gone to a Fourth of July party without hearing “Surfin’ U.S.A.” blasting from the speakers.
The Beach Boys have played over 100 shows this year from February to November, a truly jaw-dropping number. Finally, wrapping up the band’s remarkable series of tour dates on November 19th right before the holidays, I think it’s safe to say that the boys will be taking a break, but wouldn’t it be nice if they hit the road again soon?
Only two of the five original members, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, performed around the world this year; the additional seven members have done a wonderful job of carrying on the legacy of “America’s Band.” Though if you’re lucky, you may catch John Stamos, making a few select tour appearances on stage singing amongst the band members.
On November 15th, the Toyota Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT was graced by the band’s undeniable vibrancy. Palm trees and colorful lights set the scene, lining the stage and surrounding heaps of instruments and mic stands. In the background, a large screen could be seen projecting their history through images and videos, with unique graphics displayed during each individual song.
After a six-decade long career with several member changes along the way, the group still sounds fantastic despite their age. If there’s any truly timeless band, it’s The Beach Boys.
Performing a set list spanning a whopping 31 songs, the band combined their most beloved hits, “Good Vibrations,” “Kokomo,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and “Surfin’ Safari,” to name a few, with a selection of classic covers of “California Dreamin’,” “Do You Wanna Dance?,” “Barbara Ann,” and “Rock and Roll Music.”
The audience was enamored by the band’s slow-paced, nostalgic performance; it was a joy to see so many individuals revisiting one of the artists that defined their generation of music.
All in all, the group delivered a stellar performance that people of all ages can enjoy. Even if you aren’t an avid listener, you will still have an absolutely amazing experience, so if you haven’t had the opportunity to see The Beach Boys live in concert, make sure you keep an eye out the next time the band visits your city!
