Ashley’s Hot Takes in the Hip-Hop World:

– Die For You by The Weekend was released as a single in 2017 from his 2016 album
Starboy. Now in 2023, I lately hear airplay of the song on the Hot 100 radio. Was this
from the popularity it gained from TikTok? Was it because of the teenage mainstream
audience heavily listening to Weekend’s music? Was it because of nostalgia?
– On his latest merch drop, singer Frank Ocean shared some posters on his social media.
Some of the posters were named “Thinkpad” and “The Chairman”. Along with that, on
the released Coachella lineup of 2023, he is announced as one of the headliners. Fans
believe that he may be hinting about a new album. This would be the first album he
released since Blond (2016), seven years ago. Are these rumors too? How big of an
impact will Frank Ocean’s comeback make in the mainstream?
– For years, rapper Travis Scott has hinted the release of the upcoming album Utopia. He
brought up times of it being delayed, including one of the reasons being the incidents at
Astroworld Music Festival in 2021. Will Utopia be released this year? If so, will be
critical reception match the commercial success of previous album Astroworld (2018)?
– Rapper Trippie Redd leaked the track list for his upcoming album “Mansion Musik” on
Twitter. Fans stormed to find this track list and features. Some of the features include
Chief Keef, Future, Lil Baby, Juice WRLD, Travis Scott, Lil Durk, Nardo Wick, Kodak
Black, BIG30, LUCKI, Rich the Kid, Summrs, Fijimacintosh, Rylo Rodriguez, Ski Mask
the Slump God, G Herbo, Rob 49, DaBaby, and Lil B. A mix of well-known artists in the
modern rap music industry and newer faces. I wonder how the critics will like this blend
of features and all 25 songs on the album.
– After releasing the single “Same Problems”, rapper ASAP Rocky announced that he will
be releasing an album this year. In the same interview, he discussed that some of the
features on the album will include R&B star Miguel, rappers Tyler the Creator & Lil
Yatchy, and bass guitarist Thundercat. These features are a blend of all different genres.
This is not the first time ASAP Rocky had features of artists in different genres. In his
single ”Sundress” (2018), he featured alternative artist Tame Impala in the song. The
artist is also known to blend alternative, psychedelia, R&B, and other genres into his
music as well. Will this be ASAP Rocky’s best album yet?
– Rappers Dusty Locane, Destroy Lonely and BabyTron have the potential to reach their
popularity more into the rap mainstream this year.
– I’ve always liked Lil Yatchy’s music. I remember when rap blew up in the mainstream
back in 2016-2017 when I was in 7th grade. Lil Yachty was the first artist I listened to in
this rap wave. His albums in the past 2 years have gotten more enjoyable to listen to.
Especially Michigan Boy Boat (2021), there were many features of less-known artists on
the album, and I still enjoyed it. I can’t wait to hear his new album, Let’s Start Here.
